Now I know some of you are cringing at the very thought of self-care being a principle of anything. You somehow learned that being a selfless, multi-tasking team player was your duty as a good wife and mother.
At the risk of being cruel, I’m going to channel Dr. Phil here: How’s that working for you?
OK. Enough of the Bad Cop. Back to the good one.
Self-care often gets confused with being selfish. I’d go so far as to say if you self-care right, you become the opposite of selfish because you are full. Not needy. Not neglected. Not put upon.
So what does it look like? There’s no one answer. In fact, discovering what it looks like for you is the first, delicious step. Take time to brainstorm on what you wish someone else would have set up for you, and then do it!
It could start with a bubble bath and candles. Or indulging in a mystery novel. New pajamas. Journaling. Whatever.
The key is to schedule it. Stick to the schedule (just like you did making the family dinner.) And enjoy it. The results are tri-fold.
Not only do you get some much-deserved, long overdue joy, but you will also be decreasing your dependence on anyone else. Don’t get me wrong. It’s always nice when others do things for you. But you shouldn’t need that. That’s icing. Newsflash: you’re the cake.
The third benefit is that the more care you consciously give yourself, the more enticing being present becomes. You’ll actually enjoy this moment more often than ruminating in the past or dreading the future. And when you’re awake at the wheel of life, you can hear God easily. Clearly, even. You’ll notice if things are slightly off. Your hair won’t have to catch on fire anymore. You’ll notice when you left the stove on.
Try it. You’ll like it. You’re welcome!
If you are ready to put you first, schedule a discovery call with me today.
This call will let me get to know you and your struggles. Based on what you share with me, I will know what, if anything, I have to offer you. At the very least, you’ll get a chance to openly speak about your personal goals. This alone will serve you. It is setting a powerful intention.
I look forward to talking with you.
